The Tanzbrunnen in Cologne-Deutz kicks off the 2026 open-air season on 9 May – and, following extensive renovation work, is now looking better than ever. Over the past few months, one of the city’s best-known venues has undergone comprehensive modernisation. All renovation works were carried out in close consultation with the heritage conservation authorities to preserve the unique character of the historic event space.
Start of the 2026 Open-Air Season
Since October 2025, the listed complex in the Rheinpark has been substancially refurbished. The City of Cologne, as the owner, invested around 16 million euros in the renovation and further development of the site. The work has now largely been completed in time for the start of the new season. This means that the traditional open-air venue is once again fully available for events.
New Canopies and Improved Weather Protection
The change is particularly noticeable in the striking funnel-shaped canopies, which have defined the appearance of the Tanzbrunnen since the 1970s. The five existing canopies have been replaced with new structures of the same design, while also being built taller and complemented by four additional canopies. This not only improves weather protection for the audience but also enhances sightlines to the stage – an important aspect for today’s predominantly standing audience.
Modernised Stage and New Sound Technology
At the same time, the stage has undergone further technical and structural development. While the original stage building has retained its basic form, it has now been expanded with an additional structure providing more performance space for artists. Additionally, new speaker towers ensure state-of-the-art sound technology with high audio quality whilst reducing noise emissions.
“I am absolutely delighted by how successfully historical heritage and modern event requirements have been brought together here,” says Ralf Nüsser, Managing Director of Koelncongress GmbH. “The Tanzbrunnen remains a truly unique open-air venue – and at the same time is perfectly equipped for the years to come.”
The Historical Roots of the Tanzbrunnen
The Tanzbrunnen has a long history. As early as the 1920s, a spacious square featuring a fountain was created in what is now the Rheinpark. In 1949, a platform was built above it, on which dance events were regularly held – hence the name ‘Tanzbrunnen’. The site acquired its distinctive architectural character during the Federal Horticultural Shows of 1957 and 1971. Cologne architect Hans Schilling designed the stage building, whilst Frei Otto set new standards with his innovative tent and canopy structures. His lightweight architecture remains influential to this day and later also inspired the roof structures of Munich’s Olympic Park.
Popular Open-Air Venue in Cologne
With capacity for up to 12,500 guests, the Tanzbrunnen is now one of the most popular open-air venues in Cologne. Together with Theater am Tanzbrunnen, Rheinterrassen and the km 689 Cologne Beach Club, the site forms a versatile event destination right on the banks of the Rhine.
Today, the Tanzbrunnen combines tradition with modern event culture – once again offering the perfect stage for concerts, festivals and special summer evenings in Cologne.
