History

The Design Post is located in the historic three-hinged arch hall of the former Cologne-Deutz post office, which was built between 1910 and 1914 as a parcel post office. The imposing building served as a central hub for international shipping and handled the sharp increase in parcel traffic before the First World War. The building also included extensive track and operating facilities.
The solid steel structure is considered an important example of early industrial architecture and reflects the engineering advances of the time. During World War II, the Deutz post office was severely damaged, rebuilt, and used as a parcel handling center. After the privatization of the German Federal Post Office, the site lost its original function in the 1990s.
The three-hinged arch hall was the only part of the original post office building to be preserved and was listed as a historic monument in 1988. In 2005, the Dutch architectural firm OIII carried out a sensitive renovation in line with historic preservation guidelines. Since 2006, the hall has been used as a showroom for international furniture and interior design brands.
